The Marriage of Understanding Yourself & Your Target Companies

When I was in college in the early 1990s, I embarrassed myself during an interview. I went into a very promising interview with GE Capital and was not prepared. I could not articulate why I wanted to work for them and what I valued or where I added value. And this climaxed when the interview asked me about GE Capital and I began discussing appliances. Needless to say, my phone never rang with a return call. During this time, I learned several lessons. I will share them here.

Let’s start with understanding myself. I, despite being an Honor’s student in the College of Liberal arts, could not articulate what drove me to make decsions or what values drove me. No one ever taught me this extremely valuable lesson and exercise. It is amazing when I coach peers and college students today becuase I have a plan and framework that has been undercontruction since that fateful interview day. My passion is to share and help others stand out from the pack.

It also goes without say that you have to understand the companies that you are looking to work for. Not on a surface level - but through deep research and poeple, performance, and processes that are out there if you are willing to put in the work. I really enjoy teaching this facet of our program because it puts the interviewers in a state of being very impressed with my students. Isnt that where you want to be?

Wherever you are in this journey, the key is continuing on the path. We can help.
